Homeopathy can support both acute and chronic conditions.

Acute symptoms appear suddenly and need different remedies and approaches than chronic conditions, which develop gradually and persist over time.
Acute symptoms include symptoms such as coughs, colds, flu, fevers, minor injuries, burns, and digestive upsets, and can usually be treated with self-prescribed homeopathic remedies.
You can learn more about self prescribing confidently for you and your loved ones from a lot of free resources such as ebooks, short courses, podcasts and webinars.

Chronic conditions develop gradually and tend to persist, often requiring an individualized, long-term approach. In such cases, working with a homeopath is advised, as accurate prescribing depends on objective, unprejudiced observation, as outlined by Hahnemann in the Organon. For this reason, even homeopaths consult other homeopaths for treatment. It really does take another person to be objective in order to find not just the right remedy, but dosage and potency also. In addition, the consultation itself has therapeutic value, supporting self-reflection, self-understanding, and the experience of being met with empathy. It can feel frustrating to be advised to work with a homeopath rather than manage symptoms alone. In practice, chronic cases often shift more efficiently when they are properly observed and guided, and many people find that only a small number of well-timed consultations are needed to create meaningful, lasting change. When the remedy, potency, and timing are correct, the improvement in overall health often outweighs the initial investment.
There are some things you can do to get the most out of your appointments with a Homeopath. Firstly, come prepared. Your homeopath will ask in detail about your symptoms, including what makes them better or worse. Keeping a simple journal of changes in your health, sleep, energy, mood, and physical symptoms can greatly support accurate prescribing and increase the likelihood of finding the right remedy early on.
Secondly, once treatment begins, continue to make notes on any changes you observe. Be as specific as possible. In homeopathy, small and seemingly insignificant details often carry the most meaning. What you might dismiss as “not worth mentioning” can be central to understanding how the remedy is acting. Be as open and honest as you can. Back in late 1800's, James Tyler Kent, likened the homeopathic consultation to confession. Not in a religious sense, but as a space where the patient speaks freely, without interruption or judgement, often voicing thoughts, fears, and experiences they may never have articulated before, allowing a deeper understanding of the person behind the symptoms. If you can get to this deep level of connection with your homeopath, you are more likely to see lasting transformation.
Lastly, allow time for observation and resist the urge to interfere too quickly. Avoid changing remedies, dosages, or adding new treatments without discussion, as this can blur the clinical picture. Clear observation and patience are often what allow genuine, lasting improvement to unfold.
By understanding the difference between acute and chronic conditions, you can make the most of homeopathic treatment. Simple steps such as preparing carefully for your appointments, observing changes closely, and being as open and honest as possible will help your homeopath find the right remedy more quickly.
