We all experience stressful moments in life but if you can be prepared and have the right remedy on hand, you will feel more calm knowing that you can give your nervous system the boost it needs to rebalance and stay grounded. Homeopathy has so many wonderful remedies that can help you handle acute emotional stress. These are those sudden, intense reactions to a distressing event. It's that conversation with a work colleague that has left you reeling, or the panic attack after seeing your bank balance, or possibly the shock from seeing an accident on your way home. Usually these occurances happen and we can brush it off and carry on with day-to-day life, but sometimes it can leave us with disturbed sleep, anxiety and overwhelm. It can also trigger lingering physical symptoms like a racing heart, restlessness, insomnia, or digestive upset that will not go away even when we have removed the original cause of the distress.

Responding early with homeopathic remedies, calming practices, or self-care, helps the mind and body restore balance quickly.

In order to find the right remedy that will have the most effective impact, follow my 3 tips for self-prescribing - 1. Observe, 2. Match, 3. Differentiate.

  1. Observe

During the years of training it takes to become a Homeopath, a lot of time is spent ‘unlearning ’ how we normally think about disease and start thinking like a

Homeopath. The very first thing we are taught is: Observe the symptoms. The more details you have about your symptoms, the more chance you will get the right remedy. Don't ask 'what is the remedy'. I know it sounds counter intuitive and you just want to find the remedy that will help, but if you jump straight in reading about all the possible remedies you will soon get overwhelmed and not know which one to choose. It can be a bit like horoscopes where everyone seems to fit. This is why we observe first.

Ask yourself these questions

1. What has changed? sleep pattern? thirst? appetite?

mood? cravings? etc

2.What has stayed the same?

3. Where is the disturbance located? Any body

aches/pains?

4. How am I feeling? Emotions? temperament?

5. What happened to bring this on?

6. Has anything else changed?

7. Does anything make it better?

8. Are there any changes of behavior at certain times

of the day/night ?

9. Does anything make it worse?

11. Is there a change in digestion?

12. Am I hot or cold, or are parts of my body different

temperatures?

13.What else can I observe? skin? sweat patches?

14. Can I spot any patterns of sleep at night or

during the day with nap times?

  1. Match

Now we have made our observations, we can read about the remedies that MATCH THE SYMPTOM PICTURE in our homeopathic resources. You can either use online materials medica or here are some helpful resources I can recommend -

The booklet that comes with the Helios Kit

Andrew Lockie "The Family Guide to Homeopathy" -https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0671767712

Marcus Fernandez "Homeopathy at Home" - https://amzn.eu/d/j6U9nX3

Remember, homeopathy works on the principle of LIKE CURES LIKE so we are looking for a remedy that is the best match. If you have a few symptoms, ie. a headache, dizziness, nauseous, feeling hot, then look up each symptom and see which remedies match, then you cross reference to see which remedy comes up most often and matches ALL of your symptoms. Try to find 3 or 4 possible remedies at this stage. For example, it could be Belladonna, Nux Vomica or Bryonia. At this stage, all 3 could match.

Here are my top remedies to use in times of emotional stress taken from my ebook for sleep. You can download the full ebook here.

  1. Differentiate

You probably have 3 or 4 remedies that match and this is a good thing. There is never just 1 remedy that matches. So now you can read more about the possible remedies and narrow your selection down further. Look at the modalities of each remedy as these will help you to distinguish further. For example, Bryonia is always better for stillness. So if your headache hurts as much when lying still as it does when moving around, it won't be Bryonia that matches. Or Belladonna is always hot. So if there is no fever or flushed, hot face, it won't be Belladonna. Rhus Tox is always better for movement, so if moving around makes your symptoms worse, it won't be Rhus Tox. These are called the 'keynotes' of the remedies and it is vital that you look at these when differentiating between remedies.

Having 3 or 4 remedies to choose from is also a good idea becaus if the first remedy isn't a good match you can go back and try the others that were a close match. Using this method means that you will learn more about each remedy and you also have a plan B should your first choice not give the results you were hoping for.
